The Gowanus canal is a 2-mile-long canal in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, it was once a vital cargo transportation hub, the canal has seen decreasing use since the mid-20th century, parallel with the decline of domestic waterborne shipping. The canal became a transportation hub for factories and cargo during the industrial revolution. The industrial revolution lead to more people living in the area along the canal. Excess waste was being dumped into the canal. Seven bridges cross the canal, carrying Union Street, Carroll street, Third Street, the NYC subway’s, Culiver viaduct, Ninth Street, Hamilton Avenue, and the Gowanus Expressway from north to south. This Project is my reflection of it watching it change and the Environment around it growing up in this area and see it built into this more developed and nicer place feels quite strange. There is a lot of history within this place. This is my personal journey of learning and discovering as well as documenting this place
I grew up along the canal so I’ve seen it change over the years with this project I was exploring along the canal where I grew up photographing the way it looks now and wont look like this for much longer. New developments are being build in the Gowanus and surrounding areas of the canal. This space growing up was falling apart with few factories and spaces being used from its past of being a vital Industrial hub. Watching the Nature take over the years before developments came in was really important for me to capture. These photographs are me documenting a space that will soon be transformed to another.
